RESUMO

Biphenotypic sinonasal sarcoma (BSNS) is a recently described, low-grade, slow-growing sarcoma with neural and myogenic features with exclusive location in sinonasal track and characteristic PAX3- MAML3 gene fusion. Differentiating this tumor from its commoner mimics needs knowledge of this entity to avoid over treatment. This tumor has unique morphology, clinical course, and genetics. We report this in a 47-year-old female who was diagnosed with such a rare, solitary fibrous tumor—hemangiopericytoma (HPC-SFT) on limited initial biopsy. On subsequent excision, typical morphology and immunohistochemistry helped to clinch the diagnosis.

RESUMO

Trigeminal neuralgia or tic douloureux is a commonly diagnosed facial pain syndrome with a female predominance and with peak occurrence in the age group of above 50 years. Treatment options range from conservative pharmacologic therapy to invasive surgical procedures. The mode of treatment is based on patient’s systemic health, compliance and severity of the disease. Peripheral neurectomy is the safest and simplest method that can be accomplished under local anesthesia with minimum risks and excellent pain relief to the patient. However, there are incidences where this mode of treatment also fails to manage the disease, and further surgical options must be considered. In this case report, we present a case of a 50-year-old female patient who has undergone peripheral neurectomy of infraorbital nerve.

RESUMO

Cherubism is a rare non-neoplastic hereditary disease related to genetic mutations characterized by symmetrically swollen cheeks, particularly over the angles of the mandible, and an upward turning of the eyes. The affected mandible and maxilla begin to swell in early childhood, and are gradually increased until the age of puberty. Apparently, surgical intervention is unnecessary unless significant functional, esthetic, or emotional disturbances develop. The purpose of the present paper is to report a case of cherubism in which all the classic features of the ailment were seen to a degree exceeding even that of the grade 3 classification.

RESUMO

Sympathetic Ophthalmia is a rare but serious complication that can occur following penetrating injuries of the globe of the eye. So far the only known method of preventing this is to remove the injured eye. The purpose of this paper is to make the maxillofacial surgeons to be familiar with this serious complication in order that measures can be instituted early to prevent loss of vision in the uninjured eye.

RESUMO

The hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumor (HPT-JT) syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by the occurrence of parathyroid tumors and ossifying jaw fibromas. Hyperparathyroidism is due to increased activity of the parathyroid glands, either from an intrinsic abnormal change altering excretion of parathyroid hormone (primary or tertiary hyperparathyroidism) or from an extrinsic abnormal change affecting calcium homoeostasis stimulating production of parathyroid hormone (secondary hyperparathyroidism). Primary hyperparathyroidism is the third most common endocrine disorder, with the highest incidence in postmenopausal women. Here we present an intresting case of hyperparathyroidism– jaw tumour where the patient had reduced serum calcium and serum alkaline phosphate level.

RESUMO

Carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen analyses of banana leaf and pseudostem biomass revealed their potentiality as substrates for microorganisms. Infra-red (IR) spectra of both biomass show presence of cellulose, xylan and lignin. IR spectra of leaf and pseudostem biomass degraded in solid state fermentation (SSF) by two Pleurotus species (P. sajor-caju and P. ostreatus) for 40 days showed the utilization of cellulose, xylan and lignin by these microbes. Dynamics of various lignocellulolytic enzymes of Pleurotus species and analyses of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen contents of degraded biomass supported the same. Both the Pleurotus species exhibited lignin consumption ability on both the substrates.

RESUMO

Pseudostems and leaves from banana waste were used for biotransformation into protein by using P. sajor-caju, an oyster mushroom. Treatment of formalin (500 ppm) + carbendazim (12.5 ppm) of these substrates was found to favour relatively high percentage biological efficiency (BE) of P. sajor-caju.. Steam sterilization also exhibited comparable yield performance by P. sajor-caju. Fruiting bodies harvested from all the treatments had relatively higher protein contents. The spent substrate (steam sterilized) was found to be suitable as an ideal animal feed because of its rich nutritive composition.

RESUMO

The adult Wistar strain albino rats were vasectomised by conventional method and maintained for six months. The vasectomized rat testis had elevated water content with depleted dry matter. Glycogen content was increased with indication of mobilization of hexoses into HMP pathway. The vasectomized rat testis showed preferential utilisation of triglycerides. In view of increased 3 beta-HSD and 17 beta-HSD activities, accelerated androgenesis was envisaged in vasectomized rat testis.

RESUMO

Electrical stimulations were applied to the gastrocnemius muscle of intact frog. Rana hexadactyla (Lesson) for short-term (SMS) and prolonged (PMS) periods. Short-term muscular stimulations resulted in decreased glycogenolysis and glycolysis with depleted glycogen and lactic acid contents in the muscles and increased lactic acid content in the blood. The activity levels of SDH and MDH were decreased in SMS muscles. Prolonged muscular stimulations, on the other hand, increased glycogenolysis and glycogenolysis was suggested to be due to stepped-up glycogenesis. Tissue oxidative metabolism was also correlated with regulation of activities of enzymes concerned with anaerobic pathways.

RESUMO

Bilateral orchiectomy has been performed in adult albino rats and tissue lipid profiles were compared with the controls. Both the reproductive and non-reproductive tissues and serum accumulated lipid with suppressed lipolysis on orchiectomy. The levels of triglycerides and cholesterol were elevated in all the tissues of orchiectomized rats. The phospholipid content of epididymis was significantly depleted, while the same was elevated in non-reproductive tissues.
